Types of springs and their applications
The most common way to classify springs is according to how a load is applied to the spring. You may be familiar with the following:
Compression Spring: Designed to work under compressive loads, found in shock absorbers, spring pads, mechanical pencils, and telescoping pens.
Extension Spring: Designed to withstand tensile loads. A prime example is Slinky, but they also exist in luggage scales and garage door mechanisms.
Torsion Spring: Designed to work under torque (torsion force); powers every clothespin and mousetrap.
